A Magical Night at Killea Singing Circle

For over 25 years, the Killea Singing Circle has brought unforgettable nights of music and storytelling to O’Sullivan’s Pub, nestled under the Devil’s Bit. What began under the care of the late Margaret O’Sullivan, continued with Moll Treacy, and in recent years, has been expertly guided by John Egan.

Last Monday week, another brilliant night unfolded, filled with songs, stories, and recitations. The presence of the legendary Cork singer Seán Ó Sé, who turned 87 this week, made the occasion even more special. He treated the audience to stunning renditions, including the famous “Poc ar Buile.”

🎤 Highlights of the Night:

  • Joe Barry & Willie Fogarty delivered a beautiful duet of The Greenland Whales.
  • Donal Bowe performed Johnny McEvoy’s The Ballad of John Williams.
  • Michael Costigan captivated with his sharp recitations.
  • Michael Healy, Ailbe Egan, and the Connolly brothers from Loughmore were in full voice.
  • Bernard O’Sullivan & daughter Emma-Jane performed Spancil Hill.
  • Mick Roche brought it home with Johnny Morrissey from Templemore.

At halftime, a true Irish feast appeared—white puddings, brown bread, mince pies, chicken wings, tea, apple tart, and even a birthday cake for Seán Ó Sé! Flowers were also presented to Margaret O’Sullivan, celebrating her 50th birthday.

As the night went on, more voices joined in – Maxi Crampton, Michael Ryan, Tom Fogarty, Bernie Nolan from Carlow, and even Andrew from Kent, England, visiting with his wife Liz. John Egan’s moving performance of The Cormack Brothers brought the night to a perfect close.

A huge thank you to Seán, Margaret, Mary, and Bernard for keeping this beautiful tradition alive. The songs, the stories, and the sense of community are what make Killea Singing Circle such a special place.

📅 Looking forward to the next gathering on February 13th!
